Seriously they do suck, until very recently I was studying a Diploma of Business, Majoring in Entrepreneurship. I quit when they started teaching S.M.A.R.T goals.
Let me tell you what they are:
Now it’s not that I am against goal setting, not even in the slightest, but I believe in dream goals. Let me share, a little story of a dream goal, one day I decided I wanted to go to the Caribbean and run charter boat. a pretty long and story with some very amusing elements, but let me give you the short side to it.
It’s It took me a good 8 months to convince my now husband, we then sold everything and took a massive gamble and flew to the Caribbean to get our dream job.
I was to be the “Cook” and he was to be the “Captain”. I really wasn’t much of a cook, in fact at that period in our lives, we did eat out a lot and David cooked the rest of the time. David didn’t have the qualifications to run a charter boat. He did have a lifetime of sailing experience and the skills needed to run the boat.
Prior to selling our house, I emailed every charter company in the Caribbean I could find and enquired about work. The ones that actually bothered to respond, said don’t come there is no work, we sold our house anyway.
So let me sum it up for you, at the point our house was sold, we had already spent about $7000 on airfares, I couldn’t cook to save myself, in fact after the purchase of the airline tickets and selling of the house, I decided to find out what my job would entail. Turns out vegemite sandwiches and baked beans on toast, wouldn’t cut the mustard. It was a full cooked breakfast, lunch, cocktails, entree, dinner, dessert and snacks. I cried when I found this out, amusing now, not at the time. David wasn’t qualified for the job, we were told not to come as there was no work. I would suggest there was nothing S.M.A.R.T about our goal setting. I still laugh out loud when I think about it, and people were telling us how lucky we were and that is just as funny. No luck about it, just a dream.
David somehow managed to get the qualification two weeks before we flew out of Australia, I got my head around cooking and we going to get that job, somehow. Existing on the weak Australian dollar in a place that is pitched at luxury holidays is no easy feat. We both lost a lot of weight as we just ate enough to exist, we walked miles to knock on doors looking for a job on an almost daily basis with constant knock backs.
Six weeks later a lot lighter in both our pockets and waistline and on the brink of flying home with out tail between our legs, we were offered the most amazing job and ended up sailing and running an amazing, beautiful catamaran throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean for 18 months and traveling a for almost 6 months throughout Europe.
There is no doubt in my mind that if we had of set down to write S.M.A.R.T goals, we never would have taken the first step, it was the dream that keep got us the job.
Take as long as you need, write down you dreams, where you want to be, what you want from life. Make it big, make it a little scary and just get started, find out how to make it happen.
