There is no doubt that internet usage and the use of social media is continuing to grow throughout the world population. In Australia alone 79% of the population has access to the internet, that equates to around 19 million. In addition 52% percent access the internet more then 5 times a day and 68% of those users have a social media profile. Facebook continues to dominate the social media space, capturing 93% of users and they spend an average of eight and a half hours a week on the site.

Australians also continue to embrace technology through use of multiple internet enabled devices. The average Australian owns three such devices with laptops (75%), smartphones (70%) and tablets (55%). For this reason it is also critical to have a website that works across all platforms.

In basic terms it is considered to be, websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Social media makes the transfer of text, photos, audio, video and information in general increasingly fluid. There are literally thousands of different apps and websites available.
The best advice I can give any small business when starting out in their social media journey is to stick to one or a maximum of two social media accounts. Like any marketing plan, if you are doing it yourself it will take time not just to implement but to also learn. If you take on too much, chances are you will become overwhelmed and won’t tackle any of it. Clearly the place to be when you consider the above statistics is Facebook, as it is the worlds largest networking site.

A question or concern that I often get asked is regarding privacy, it is important to remember that although you need a personal Facebook account to create and manage a Facebook business account, essentially the two are not linked. So as long as you have the privacy settings on your personal account at a level you are happy with none of your followers on your business account will see any of your personal information, unless you allow them to.
You can set a personal account where people can follow you, which means that any posts that not are limited will be open to anyone. My advice is to keep your business and personal accounts completely separate.
